What Is WPM?

WPM means words per minute. In typing tests, one standard word represents five characters rather than one dictionary word.

The basic formula

WordsFlare divides correct final aligned characters by five, then divides the result by elapsed minutes. If you type 250 correct characters in one minute, the displayed result is 50 WPM.

Raw WPM and displayed WPM

Raw WPM uses every printable character entered, including incorrect attempts. Displayed WPM uses only correct final characters aligned with the target. Raw speed can therefore be higher when a fast round contains mistakes.

How accuracy works

Accuracy is the share of printable keystrokes that were correct when entered. Backspace is not printable, so it does not increase the denominator. Removing a wrong character still records a corrected error.

What is a good WPM?

A useful target depends on your device, task, language, and current comfort. Compare your own results under similar conditions and look for steadier accuracy before chasing a single peak score.

How to improve

1. Choose a duration you can repeat without tension.
2. Slow down enough to keep errors visible and deliberate.
3. Practise a small group of difficult characters or patterns.
4. Use recent trends rather than judging one run.
